Short answer
Use a 4 inch mini for cabinet doors, wide trim, furniture and narrow strips of wall, and a 6 to 6-1/2 inch for flat doors and larger panels. Fit a foam or short woven cover for enamel on smooth parts, and a cover that matches your wall roller’s fabric and nap when you touch up walls.
Sizes and what they are for
| Size | Best for | Cover to fit |
|---|---|---|
| 4 in. | Cabinet doors and boxes, paneled doors, wide trim, furniture, narrow wall strips | Foam or 1/4 in. woven for enamel; match the wall cover for touch-ups |
| 6 to 6-1/2 in. | Flat doors, cabinet sides, shelves, larger panels | Same as above, with fewer passes |
| 9 in. (for comparison) | Walls, ceilings, flat doors | Nap by surface: see the nap guide |

How to get a seamless finish with a mini
- Match the cover. Purdy says to match fabric and nap between your mini and main roller. Different covers leave different textures, and the difference shows in raking light.
- Do not overload it. Bob Vila’s testers found one microfiber mini set applied paint without lint but dripped easily after loading. Roll off the excess on the tray ramp.
- Keep the edge wet. Roll the mini strips at the same time as the open wall, not an hour later.
- Use a small tray or pail. A 9 inch tray works, but a mini tray or a paint pail with a built-in grid is easier to hold on a ladder.

Questions people ask
What is a mini roller good for?
Small, smooth areas a 9 inch roller is too wide for: cabinet doors and boxes, flat doors, shelves, furniture, wide trim and baseboards, and narrow strips of wall around windows, doors and fixtures. Benjamin Moore suggests a 4 inch roller for paneled cabinet doors, wide trim, tight spaces, edges, frames and handrails.
Can I paint a whole wall with a mini roller?
You can, but it is slow, and slow is how lap marks happen: the paint at the edge of your last pass starts to dry before you get back to it. Use a 9 inch roller for open wall and keep the mini for the tight bits.
Will a mini roller match the texture of my wall?
Only if the cover matches. Purdy suggests matching fabric and nap between the mini and the main roller for a seamless finish, so a wall rolled with a 3/8 inch microfiber needs a 3/8 inch microfiber mini.
